In 1824 Martin De Leon was granted permission to found a colony on the Guadalupe River at a site then known as Las Sabinals, or Cypress Grove. The town that he founded was named Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe de Jesus Victoria, generally referred to as Guadalupe Victoria. After the Texas Revolution, the community was simply known as Victoria.
