Victoria was laid out according to colonization law, providing entire city blocks to serve as Market Square (where city hall now stands), a public square, government Square, and blocks set aside for churches and schools. Since 1941 the public square has been called De Leon Plaza. Across Main Street from this plaza is the block set aside for a cathedral. De Leon’s death in 1834 put an end to any plans for this structure.
